Designing one daily workspace for Best Buy store leaders

I designed a schedule-aware workspace that surfaced the few signals a store leader could act on today.

Context

Best Buy Connect · internal employee platform

My role

I defined the daily-work framework, information hierarchy, product states, and the minimum experience prepared for engineering handoff.

ROLE • SENIOR UX DESIGNER

SCOPE • STRATEGY + IA

DIRECTION • PARTIAL DELIVERY

A daily leadership view organized around who is working now

My Team screen: Today, 8 working now with 3 priorities needing attention, and a ranked employee list

Today’s priorities, ranked by who needs a leader first.

A schedule-aware view that opens the day with next actions instead of a search.

The view answers, in order

  1. 1Who is working right now
  2. 2Who needs follow-up today
  3. 3What to open next

The project in one minute

Store leaders used separate tools for scheduling, learning, coaching, employee information, and development. Each tool answered its own questions. What leaders lacked was one view of the day in front of them.

I designed My Team Insights as a coordination layer that connected schedule context, today’s signals, relevant employees, and the source experience where work could continue.

ROLE
Senior UX Designer · daily-work framework, hierarchy, states, and handoff
TIMELINE
Discovery into active design throughout 2024
USERS
Store leaders coordinating the current day
STATUS
Minimum experience reached handoff; full product did not launch

A phased product direction, not a launched workspace

≈60 min/day

leaders' own estimate of time spent stitching tools together

5

separate tools the daily view had to coordinate

4 stages

schedule → signal → employee → source action

Handoff

minimum experience specified through engineering handoff

How to read this

The 60-minute figure is a directional estimate from leaders, not a timed study. The minimum experience reached handoff; the full workspace and onboarding direction did not launch.

THE DECISIONS THAT SHAPED THE PRODUCT

Three decisions turned scattered signals into daily direction

TIME HORIZON

Design for the day in front of the leader.

Daily staffing and development decisions created a sharper product boundary than a broad analytics dashboard.

CONTEXT

Use the schedule to make signals actionable.

Learning, coaching, and staffing needs matter differently when the employee is working now.

OWNERSHIP

Coordinate work without replacing every tool.

My Team prioritized and routed. Partner products retained their deeper workflows.

Can this be completed today without disrupting customer coverage?

  • Employee is scheduled
  • Leader support is available

REFLECTION

Daily context connected scattered tools to clear next actions.

The lasting value is a daily-work framework and cross-team ownership model that can prioritize action without replacing each source tool.
